TOYAMA -- In response to a fatal attack at a police box in Toyama Prefecture last June, the Toyama prefectural police have announced they will spend 73 million yen (669,000 dollars) to beef up security at the facility.
A police officer dispatched to the Toyama Chuo Police Station's Okuda police box was stabbed to death in June and his gun taken, ultimately leading to the fatal shooting of a civilian.
According to the announcement, the police box's office will be screened off with safety glass and have a sliding window. Its door will be locked, so visitors will communicate with officers through the glass.
This will be the first police box in the nation to feature this design. The new Okuda police box will open this autumn as a model police box for the prefecture.
The male police officer killed last year was stabbed by the assailant with a knife as soon as he opened the backdoor after hearing someone knocking. Another police officer in Toyama Prefecture was attacked last Thursday at a residential police box.
