Opposition parties, including the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan (CDPJ), are becoming increasingly wary of the possibility that Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga will dissolve the House of Representatives after enacting large-scale supplementary budget bills.
Regarding the prime minister's order to compile the third supplementary budget, CDPJ leader Yukio Edano said at a meeting of his party's executive board Tuesday: "Of the 10 trillion yen reserve budget [allocated in the second supplementary budget to counter the novel coronavirus], nearly 7 trillion yen is still unused. I urge [the government] to do what it can now before coming up with the third supplementary budget."
A senior member of the CDPJ said, "Large-scale budgets are easy to appeal to the public, and if the proportion of 'fresh water' (metaphorically meaning cash handout) in the third supplementary budget is large, it means that the prime minister wants to dissolve the government."
