To improve the indigenous Ainu people's life and transmit their culture, the establishment of a grant system will be the main pillar of a new bill, according to an outline of the bill. Regional development, tourism and other activities the Ainu will engage in are envisioned in the bill to be submitted in the ordinary Diet session next year.
The outline was presented during a meeting of the Council for Ainu Policy Promotion chaired by Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga at the Prime Minister's Office on Wednesday.
The bill also included a preferential measure for the Ainu to harvest products from national forests for the purpose of manufacturing their crafts, as well as consideration for their salmon fishing using their traditional method to pass on their culture. The outline also stipulated that commission fees would be lowered for trademark registration for Ainu crafts and other related products.
