The health ministry will decide Thursday whether to approve COVID-19 vaccines produced by Moderna Inc. of the United States and AstraZeneca of Britain, after an expert panel meeting on the day.
If the panel gives the vaccines a green light, the Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry is expected to extend special approval on Friday, as it did for the Pfizer vaccine.
The vaccines in question are the Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine made by Moderna, and Vaxzevria manufactured by AstraZeneca.
International clinical trials have shown the AstraZeneca vaccine to be 70% effective in preventing the onset of the disease. However, there have been reports of rare cases of thrombosis after inoculation overseas, so the government is considering what kind of people can receive the vaccine.
As with others, this vaccine is administered two times in the muscles of the upper arm, in principle.
