Japan Lifts Funding Suspension Of UNRWA

Protest against suspension of UNRWA funding in Beirut

Japan has recently announced the lifting of its funding suspension of the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), as confirmed by Minister for Foreign Affairs Yoko Kamikawa. This decision follows a meeting held on Saturday between Kamikawa and Philippe Lazzarini, Commissioner General of UNRWA. During the meeting, Lazzarini outlined the measures being implemented by UNRWA to enhance screening processes and educational initiatives aimed at ensuring the neutrality of UNRWA staff.

The Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a statement on Saturday, indicating that UNRWA has committed to establishing a new framework in collaboration with Japan for project management and monitoring. This framework is designed to guarantee the transparency and traceability of projects undertaken by UNRWA, thereby enhancing accountability and oversight.

The decision to resume funding to UNRWA signifies Japan's confidence in the agency's efforts to address concerns related to staff neutrality and project management. By engaging in constructive dialogue and establishing clear guidelines for collaboration, both parties aim to strengthen their partnership and ensure the effective implementation of humanitarian projects.
