Japan introduces new taxes on alcoholic drinks, lowers NHK viewing fees

A number of systems and endeavors closely related to daily life introduced changes on Thursday, while new prices for such items as alcoholic beverages and tobacco took effect as well.

New taxes were introduced on beer, wine and sake, and the television viewing fees for NHK have been reduced.

The minimum wage remain unchanged in Tokyo and six prefectures, but will be raised gradually in 40 prefectures.

Under a new system, which will be introduced in stages nationwide, people who are suspected of being infected with the novel coronavirus will have to consult with their regular doctor over the phone before they can be examined.
