Sekisui House Ltd. has announced a joint project with U.S. hotel chain Marriott International Inc. to open hotels next to Michi-no-eki roadway rest stations.
The plan is to open hotels in 25 prefectures by 2025, offering a total of about 3,000 rooms. The hotels are to be built by Sekisui House and operated under the "Fairfield By Marriott" brand, which specializes in accommodations.
The two companies will also promote local attractions and provide transportation for hotel guests, working in cooperation with local governments and 34 companies including tourism operators and railway companies.
The Michi-no-eki station system was established to provide comfortable rest areas for motorists and passengers. The stations are known for reflecting the particular characteristics of their local areas.
The first of the new hotels are scheduled to open this October, in Tochigi, Gifu, Mie and Kyoto prefectures.
