NAGAOKA, Niigata -- Four fireworks were sent up in Nagaoka, Niigata Prefecture, on Sunday in place of an annual display that was canceled this year because of the novel coronavirus outbreak.
Three white bursts brightened the night sky in memory of the victims of World War II, and one golden one as a prayer for the end of the pandemic.
Last year the Nagaoka Fireworks Festival Show, a two-day event, attracted about 1.08 million visitors. This year, however, the annual event was canceled for the first time since the end of World War II.
In its stead, the Nagaoka Fireworks Foundation organized the launch of the four fireworks, which was conducted without spectators.
