Japan earthquake triggers tsunami warning after 6.4-magnitude tremor

A tsunami warning has been issued after a 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Japan.

The tremor hit 52 miles off the northeast of the island of Honshu.

Japan's Meteorological Agency issued a warning of a tsunami up to a metre high along the north west coast of the main island.

The nearness of the epicentre of the quake to the shore has raised fears about the earthquake's potential impact.

A shake map of the Island of Honshu shows the intensity of the tremors at various locations.

At least one part of the island measured a six, which is enough to bring down less earthquake resistant houses.

Some reports have suggested the quake is as much as 6.8 magnitude.

Japan is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire and is often struck by large tremors.

The last earthquake of this size to strike Japan was in September 2018.

A 6.6-magnitude tremor hit close to Tomakomai in Hikkaido, on the north island.

Unlike that earthquake - which struck at a depth of 21 miles - the quake off Honshu is close to the surface.

Because it is just 10 miles below the surface its impact is likely to be more severe than a tremor well below the Earth's crust.

In March 2011, nearly 16,000 people were killed when an earthquake struck the Oshika Penninsula and was followed by a devastating tsunami.
