The government has designated nine countries, including Cambodia, France and Israel, as areas where the delta variant and other mutations of the novel coronavirus are raging.

In the announcement, Japan also designated the U.S. states of Alaska, Nebraska, South Carolina and Tennessee.

People entering Japan from these areas will be required to stay at designated facilities for three days.

In contrast, the Japan government will shorten the period of such stays for people arriving from certain other countries and regions. For example, the period for travelers from five countries, including India and Sri Lanka, will be reduced from the current 10 days to six.

People arriving from four other countries and regions, including Britain and Pakistan, will have to stay at designated facilities for three days, instead of the current six.

The new measures will go into effect Saturday.
