Japan COVID total passes 500,000 mark

Japan reached the grim milestone of 500,000 cumulative domestic cases of the novel coronavirus on Friday.

Osaka Prefecture announced Friday that 883 people were newly confirmed as having tested positive for the virus.

Tokyo confirmed 537 new virus cases, marking the third consecutive day that the daily figure has exceeded 500.

The number of seriously ill COVID-19 patients in Tokyo increased by two to 43.

The average number of new infections in the capital over the past seven days was 440.9, up by 15.6% from the previous week's average of 381.4, according to the Tokyo metropolitan government.
