The Japanese government welcomed a South Korean court's ruling on Wednesday rejecting the claims of former so-called comfort women who demanded compensation from Japan.
"This is a reasonable judgment in line with Japan's position," said a senior official of the Foreign Ministry.
In a similar case in January, however, the same Seoul Central District Court ordered the Japanese government to pay compensation to plaintiffs. Tokyo has said that the judgment was made contrary to international law and has repeatedly asked Seoul to take measures to remedy the situation.
The South Korean government has yet to deal with the issue, but the Japanese government intends to continue to urge South Korea to suggest a solution.
The bilateral relationship has worsened due to issues such as the above lawsuits and suits filed by former wartime requisitioned workers from the Korean Peninsula.
The Japanese government is closely watching whether South Korean President Moon Jae-in's administration will mend ties with Japan in response to the latest court decision.
