Japan Business Federation proposes 'digital bureau' to supervise envisioned agency

The Japan Business Federation (Keidanren) has proposed that a "cabinet digital bureau" be established inside the Cabinet Secretariat to function as a control center for increased digitization, and that the "digital agency" that will implement specific measures be created within the Cabinet Office.

Keidanren said in its proposal, released Wednesday, that sectionalism among Japan's ministries and agencies has put this nation behind the rest of the world when it comes to digitization. It expressed support for Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga's plan to create an organization that will unify the authority to promote digitization.

Keidanren also proposed that the government include municipal authorities in the comprehensive digitization policy.

The government is expected to compile a basic policy to establish the digital agency at the end of this year, and Keidanren will call for the business community's views be reflected in that policy.

Keidanren in 2018 urged the government to establish an "information, economy and society ministry," equivalent to a digital ministry, to unify governmental authority on the information and digital-related fields.
