Japan Airlines Co. began Monday full-scale operation of a system using facial recognition technology to verify the identity of passengers when traveling via Haneda and Narita airports.
The system eliminates the need for passengers to show passports and boarding passes when going through security checkpoints and boarding gates, reducing contact with airport staff and speeding up the boarding process.
The built-in camera of a machine installed at a check-in counter photographs a passenger's face and links the image to their passport information. Subsequently, when the passenger checks in baggage or passes through a security check or boarding gate, cameras installed in those locations identify the passenger.
Sometimes lengthy baggage checks and security procedures can be done quickly.
Passengers must take off masks when facing the cameras.
For now, JAL will use the system on some routes at Narita and Haneda airports.
All Nippon Airways Co. also began full-scale operation of the same system on some routes at Narita Airport on Monday.
