Houssem Aouar's agent reportedly played a role in Arsenal's failure to sign the Lyon midfielder before the transfer window closed.
The Gunners were desperate to add a new creative midfielder to their squad and Aouar was thought to be their number one target throughout the summer.
Arsenal's initial bid for Aouar was rejected by Lyon and the Gunners were planning to make an improved second bid to get a deal over the line on deadline day.
But the French midfielder eventually declared that he was staying at the Groupama stadium, leaving Arsenal to complete a deal for Atletico Madrid's Thomas Partey instead.
And according to ESPN, Aouar's proposed move to Arsenal collapsed with the player's agent largely to blame.
It is claimed that Brahim Aouar asked for a large commission for his brother to sign for Arsenal with the player having his heart set on a move to north London, but the failure to agree terms eventually led to the deal being called off.
Regardless, some Arsenal supporters took to social media with optimism that a future deal for the France midfielder can still be completed.
One fan tweeted: "Since the ground work has been laid out with Lyon, we can use the January window to get Aouar done very quickly."
Another wrote: "We'll get it done in January then, Aouar might have kicked his brother out as his agent."
A third posted: "Sort the agent over next 2 months. Get it done in January."
Aouar made his France debut on Tuesday, starting in the 7-1 win over Ukraine.
After the game, the midfielder was asked about the Arsenal speculation and whether he was happy to be staying at Lyon.
“Of course I asked myself all the necessary questions," he said.
“I am in the headspace to have a great season with my club and get back the points that we have lost.
“So of course we are going to try to do the best season and to try to put the team and the club back in its rightful place, at the top of France.
“Disappointed? I am the opposite.
“I am at home, in the club that I love, with my friends and my family.
“So certainly I have all my bearings and it is giving me even more motivation to have a good season and to bring the club back into the top places in France.”
