January 18 is most dangerous day on roads with more accidents reported, data reveals

The most dangerous day of the year to drive when most accidents are reported is January 18, according to data from an insurance company.

Analysis of claims records from Admiral Car Insurance, shows there are on average more accident claims registered on that date compared with any other day of the year.

Based on the study of claims from the last eight years, Admiral found that on average 33 per cent more accident claims are made every year on January 18, compared to other days.

When compared to the safest day on the roads, which is December 25, the car insurer found there were typically 275 per cent more accidents on January 18.

Lorna Connelly, head of claims at Admiral, said : “The changing weather and road conditions commonly found during the winter months can bring some of the most difficult situations for motorists to try and navigate.

"This undoubtedly plays a part on the number of accidents we see taking place on the roads at this time of year.

“Snow, ice, strong winds, flooding, frost, fog and heavy rain are common in January. Bad weather creates poor road conditions which can limit visibility and make the road surface slippery, so it’s incredibly important all drivers are well prepared for any trip they make in the winter months.

“Our claims analysis found that more road accidents happen on January 18 than on any other date, with 33 per cent more claims on this day compared with the average day throughout the year. Poor weather combined with busier roads, and stressed-out drivers, could all be contributing factors.

“Of course, with lockdown restrictions currently in place across the UK, this year could be slightly different to previous years as we continue to avoid making non-essential trips in the car. However, no matter how long your journey, driving in winter weather can always be challenging and it’s best to be prepared."

To help keep motorists safe during the winter months, Admiral has created a handy winter driving guide.
