Janoris Jenkins secretly knew Giants weren’t going to trade him

As the NFL trade deadline approached, many speculated that the New York Giants would be sellers. Even after Big Blue made a trade with the Jets to acquire Leonard Williams, who will suit up for the Giants for the first time this week, many still thought they would be trying to sell off a few of their big name veteran contracts.

One player that many assumed would be moved was cornerback Janoris Jenkins. The former All-Pro just happened to turn 31 on Tuesday, the day of the trade deadline.

Last week, following the Giants’ loss against the Lions, Jenkins was asked about the possibility of him getting traded. He dismissed it.

“I just want to play football, it’s not my decision to make,” he said.

Well, the deadline came and went without the Giants moving Jenkins (or anyone else), and Jenkins apparently knew that’s how it was going to shake out.

“I knew what was going on, I had a conversation with somebody. They had already let me know. That’s why I wasn’t even worried about it too much.” Jenkins told the New York Post. “I just let you all [media] kept the story going. I was in the loop. You always respect when somebody puts you up and lets you know what’s going on.”

Who specifically Jenkins has a conversation with is unknown (likely Pat Shurmur), but it appears the veteran knew he would remain in Giant blue as the trade deadline approached. Interestingly enough, instead of showing his cards, Jenkins led the media to believe that there was a real possibility of him getting traded.

Last year, the Giants were sellers moving both Damon Harrison and Eli Apple. And with Olivier Vernon, Jason Pierre-Paul and Snacks all off the team, Jenkins is the only player left on the team from the big name acquisitions from the 2016 free agent spending spree.

Jenkins is signed for one more year with Big Blue. Time will tell if he plays out the length of his contact, but he must have been comfortable knowing he wasn’t leaving the Giants prior to this seasons deadline.
