Sonay Kartal v Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova – Wimbledon 2025 live: British No 3 continues dream run on Centre Court

Sonay Kartal has been rewarded for the best Wimbledon run of her career so far with a first ever match on Centre Court.

The British No 3 has been on the rise over the past year, shooting up the world rankings to the brink of the top 50, which she will now break into after making the fourth round of a major for the first time. The 23-year-old Brightonian swept aside Diane Parry in the third round and now faces Russia’s Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, who beat former world No 1 Naomi Osaka on Friday.

Cameron Norrie meanwhile continues his Championships on No 1 Court against Chile’s Nicolas Jarry, having seen off 12th seed Frances Tiafoe before knocking out unheralded Italian Mattia Bellucci.

Elsewhere today, world No 1 Aryna Sabalenka is back on court after beating Emma Raducanu to play against 24th seed Elise Mertens. In the men’s draw, American fifth seed Taylor Fritz meets Australia’s Jordan Thompson while Carlos Alcaraz faces 14th seed Andrey Rublev.

Wimbledon 2025 - day six

Umpire gets on the phone to check line call!

14:30

Pavlyuchenkova is the one struggling to hold now, but not through wasting game points; instead, she’s forced to fend off break points again, just as she did in her last service game.

A couple of double faults hand Kartal cheap points along the way.

Interesting incident here at deuce. Kartal strikes long, clearly, but there’s no call from the electronic system.

The umpire addresses the crowd and then hops on the phone! They need official confirmation, even though video replays show how far out Kartal’s shot was.

I suppose it’s more a matter of whether the system is down in general...

Another long game ensues – finally Kartal holds

14:19 , Alex Pattle

Kartal 4-4 Pavlyuchenkova*

Kartal is generally dealing well with Pavlyuchenkova’s aggression. She’s managing some good depth on her own groundstrokes, as evidenced by a forehand winner right in the corner. 30-15.

Now the Briton brings up two game points, only to see them saved; again, Pavlyuchenkova showing steeliness.

Kartal gets back in front at advantage, but she frames a forehand as the players meet at deuce. These last couple of games have been quite arduous.

Ace from Kartal, though, to bring up another game point. More of those, she’ll be thinking.

No joy – Pavlyuchenkova strikes an inside-out forehand into the corner for a winner. Great form.

But a fourth game point is there for Kartal now... which goes begging, too. Deuce for the fourth time in the game.

Finally Kartal holds after back-to-back misses from Pavlyuchenkova!

Kartal fails to convert after earning four break points

14:12

*Kartal 3-4 Pavlyuchenkova

The pair fight to deuce, where Kartal brings up FOUR separate break points, only to see them all saved...

Pavlyuchenkova finally gets the hold! Good resolve from the Russian.

Another break! But to whom...?

14:03 , Alex Pattle

Kartal 3-3 Pavlyuchenkova*

Kartal starts strongly for a 30-0 lead, but Pavlyuchenkova battles back to 30-30.

Then Kartal moves to 40-30, before Pavlyuchenkova again levels the score.

The Russian earns break point, and she takes it with a cute drop shot! But only after making Kartal run alllll over the place.

Phenomenal running by the Briton. Credit to her.

Kartal breaks again to take first-set lead!

13:57 , Alex Pattle

*Kartal 3-2 Pavlyuchenkova

Kartal breaks again, and from 0-2 down, she’s 3-2 up!

Great running from the Briton in that game, and the best point saw her get to a very shallow drop shot before flicking the ball right onto the baseline – beating a flummoxed Pavlyuchenkova.

Elsewhere at Wimbledon

13:56 , Alex Pattle

Taylor Fritz took the first set against Jordan Thompson, 6-1, before getting a walkover at 3-0 in the second set!

Thompson withdrew due to injury, unfortunately. Next up for Fritz, in the quarters, is Kachanov.

On the women’s side, Solana Sierra and Laura Siegemund were about to get going when some rain delayed the start of their match.

The weather seems to be improving a tad, so hopefully they’ll begin soon.

Kartal levels the first set

13:53 , Alex Pattle

Kartal 2-2 Pavlyuchenkova*

Kartal scores first on serve, before she slices a backhand long. 15-15.

Now Pavlyuchenkova nets a backhand. 30-15.

Lovely pass! Forehand winner up the line from Kartal, after some aggressive, come-forward play by Pavlyuchenkova. 40-15.

And there’s hold, as a serve kicks up on Pavlyuchenkova, who pulls her backhand into the trams.

Kartal breaks back – to love!

13:49

*Kartal 1-2 Pavlyuchenkova

That’s much better from the Briton! Kartal breaks back immediately, and to love in fact!

A Pavlyuchenkova drop shot bounces on the wrong side of the net, and Kartal is on the board.

Pavlyuchenkova breaks Kartal early doors

13:47 , Alex Pattle

Kartal 0-2 Pavlyuchenkova*

Another break point, as a ground shot from Pavlyuchenkova clips the baseline and Kartal errs.

And Pavlyuchenkova takes it! She draws in Kartal with a drop shot, and Kartal has an easy pass available... but throws up a tame lob!

A volleyed lob response by Pavlyuchenkova is nice, but Kartal could’ve gotten there if she’d tried! Strange moment.

0-2 already.

Kartal battling to hold serve early on

13:45 , Alex Pattle

An ace from Kartal to open her first service game, and the crowd is cooing already! 15-0.

A well-angled couple of groundstrokes from Pavlyuchenkova on the next points, however, draw an error out of Kartal. The Brit slices into the net. 15-15.

Now Kartal strikes a forehand long. 15-30. The crowd is already rallying behind the home player.

Kartal levels the game before Pavlyuchenkova drags a cross-court forehand wide. 40-30.

A similar shot from Pavlyuchenkova, but this time she makes it! Winner, deuce.

And a great step-in backhand on the second serve hands the Russian advantage. Break point...

Saved! The tourist frames a forehand out of play.

Pavlyuchenkova begins with dominant hold

13:40 , Alex Pattle

*Kartal 0-1 Pavlyuchenkova

A perfect start for Pavlyuchenkova, who holds to love thanks to some big serving.

Kartal is up now.

Sonay Kartal vs Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova

13:39 , Alex Pattle

The warm-ups are complete. We’re under way on Centre Court!

Sonay Kartal vs Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova

13:28

Okay, Kartal and Pavlyuchenkova are about to take to the court!

Can the Briton’s fine run continue? We’re about to find out. The Centre Court crowd is going to be right behind her.

Who’s up next?

13:15

So, on No 1 Court, Fritz and Thompson are now duelling for the opportunity to take on Kachanov in the quarter-finals.

The last British man standing, Cam Norrie, has to wait for the conclusion of that match to take to the court, where he’ll play Nicolas Jarry.

In the women’s draw, Sonay Kartal and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova will be in action on Centre Court in about 15 minutes.

But Solana Sierra and Laura Siegemend are already on No 2 Court, about to begin their fourth-round match.

Kachanov matches best Wimbledon result with win over Majchrzak

13:04 , Alex Pattle

Kachanov 6-4, 6-2, 6-3 Majchrzak

Kachanov is through! He beats Poland’s Majchrzak in straight sets, in just one hour and 46 minutes.

Taylor Fritz or Jordan Thompson will be next for the 17th seed in the quarter-final; they square off next.

Majchrzak will move into the top 100 despite that defeat, though, and he played really well in moments.

Majchrzak broken again after Kachanov slides into net

12:56 , Alex Pattle

*Kachanov 6-4, 6-2, 4-3 Majchrzak

Majchrzak saves break point! He does so as Kachanov slides into the bottom of the net and gets tangled up, failing to reach a drop shot.

Thankfully Kachanov is okay, and he rallies well to ultimately break!

That’s got to be dispiriting for Majchrzak...

Xu back in action in girls’ competition

12:36

Xu 2-6, 6-4 Frodin*

Mimi Xu, who was knocked out of the women’s singles draw by Emma Raducanu in round one, is in a tough battle in the girls’ singles!

The 17-year-old Briton lost the first set 6-2 to Thea Frodin, but she’s just levelled the match by taking the second frame, 6-4.

Kachanov takes second set as he cruises against Majchrzak

12:19 , Alex Pattle

Kachanov 6-4, 6-2 Majchrzak*

Kachanov takes the second set 6-2, doubling his lead.

The 17th seed is one set away from a joint-best Wimbledon effort of a quarter-final place.

Order of play for Centre Court and No 1 Court today

11:54 , Alex Pattle

So, Kachanov and Majchrzak are kicking off their second set on No 2 Court, but here’s a reminder of where the main action lies today – and when:

Centre Court - 13:30 start

1 Sonay Kartal (GBR) 55 vs Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 59

2 Aryna Sabalenka [1] 1 vs Elise Mertens (BEL) [24] 9

3 Andrey Rublev [14] 113 vs Carlos Alcaraz (ESP) [2] 128

No 1 Court - 13:00 start

1 Taylor Fritz (USA) [5] 65 vs Jordan Thompson (AUS) 78

2 Nicolas Jarry (CHI) 98 vs Cameron Norrie (GBR) 109

3 Linda Noskova (CZE) [30] 40 vs Amanda Anisimova (USA) [13] 48

Kachanov takes opening set, 6-4

11:48 , Alex Pattle

Kachanov requires 32 minutes overall to take the first set!

Majchrzak slices a backhand high into the net and looks to the sky in frustration. Across the court, Kachanov pumps his fist and looks to his team.

Sinner surpasses Federer with dominant run

11:00 , Jack Rathborn

Jannik Sinner continued to navigate a serene course through the choppy waters of Wimbledon with another straight-sets win.

Pedro Martinez was his latest victim, the Spanish world number 52 – who was carrying a shoulder injury – winning just five games in a 6-1 6-3 6-1 defeat on Centre Court.

While 19 seeds perished over the opening two rounds in the men’s draw, Sinner has looked unsinkable.

In reaching the fourth round, the 23-year-old Italian has dropped only 17 games from his three matches.

Roger Federer previously held the record for the least games lost in the first three rounds at Wimbledon, 19 in 2004.

Barbora Krejcikova reacts to Wimbledon exit as defending champion

10:10 , Jack Rathborn

“All I can say that the first half of the match I was definitely enjoying myself on the court and I was feeling quite well. But then suddenly out of nowhere I just lost all my energy and I couldn't really gain it back.

“I mean, Emma was just fitter than me. Yeah, was having more energy, controlling the match at the end.

“Well, first of all, I thought that it was the food, that I ate too early. That's why I started with all the bananas and all the sugars and stuff inside. But I wasn't really feeling better, I was actually feeling worse and worse with the time, yeah, with the time on court. Yeah, it's very sad for me and very unfortunate.”

Jannik Sinner beats Roger Federer to set Wimbledon men's singles record

10:00 , Jack Rathborn

Jannik Sinner has set a new Wimbledon record for the men’s singles by only conceding 17 games so far in his three matches to the fourth round, having failed to drop a set. Roger Federer previously held the record on 19 games through three rounds.

Reacting to that and his form at SW19, he said: “Yeah, well, I watched, of course, matches of him and the classics, the all-time classics. The tennis was for sure a little bit different in a way of more serve and volleys back in the days. The grass was different.

“But yeah, obviously I enjoyed it so much, watching Roger play. I never played against him in an official match. But in the other way, how they played, it was amazing. But yeah, tennis has changed a little bit, that's for sure.

“Yeah, about the games lost, this is whatever. I'm not looking on these kind of records. I know that everything can change very quickly from one round to the other. Yeah, but again, I'm very happy to be in the next round.”

The point that ignited Novak Djokovic’s ominous Wimbledon challenge

09:50 , Jack Rathborn

It was a point to take your breath away. Novak Djokovic grabbed it with a backhand down the line. But that failed to illustrate the Serbian’s artistry after a series of audacious strokes to break down his compatriot Miomir Kecmanovic.

If Jannik Sinner had earlier surged into the fourth round, the latest step in a dominant run to the semi-finals, then Djokovic in this form may well await. Djokovic grappled with his game a little more here, even though he was admittedly met with more force in Kecmanovic than Sinner’s opponent Pedro Martinez.

This was a clinic, eventually, but the fuse to light the torch was in the eighth game of the first set. The point of the Championships, surely. Fourteen strokes and Djokovic showcased all of his toys for the gleeful crowd. With the roof open and the sun peaking behind the clouds, Djokovic, instead, lit up Centre Court.

How Kartal reached the round of 16

09:40 , Lawrence Ostlere

Kartal roared into the fourth round at Wimbledon after sweeping aside French qualifier Diane Parry.

The 23-year-old from Brighton is in the last 16 of a grand slam for the first time in her career after a sizzling 6-4, 6-2 victory.

Kartal, ranked 298 this time last year, is on the cusp of the top 50 and could even finish the tournament as British No 1, usurping Emma Raducanu and Katie Boulter.

She is the fourth unseeded British woman to reach the fourth round this century after Laura Robson, Heather Watson and Raducanu.
