Janey Godley tells fans she 'cried and cried' over ovarian cancer diagnosis as she thanks NHS

Scots comedian Janey Godley has revealed she 'cried and cried' when told she had ovarian cancer in an emotional video online where she thanked the 'unbelievably brilliant' NHS staff for their support.

We told earlier today how the 60-year-old comic shared a picture of herself in a hospital bed as she announced the news on social media.

She had been due to perform at the Festival Theatre in Edinburgh on Friday and The Brunton in Musselburgh on Saturday but has cancelled the last shows in her tour.

The star has been receiving treatment and told of her shock diagnosis only yesterday and how she has 'done nothing but cry and cry and cry'.

Now in a heartbreaking video on Twitter, Godley speaking from a hospital room in Glasgow, apologised to fans and thanked supporters.

She said: "I'm really sorry I can't make the Musselburgh and Edinburgh shows this weekend, it's the very last dates of the tour and the tour has been so brilliant and so well attended and successful.

"Unfortunately while I was doing the tour I, unbeknownst to me, had ovarian cancer.

"I want to thank everyone for all their support and all their help and for coming out and sharing so much laughter with me.

"Onto the next step of the journey, and what is that journey?

"I don't know if I'm going to be one of these people who battle bravely and fight every step.

"I don't know, that doesn't feel how I've been the last day where I've done nothing but cry and cry and cry.

"But I'm going to use science, and technology and I'm going to try and cope with this next step of my journey."

Godley urged anyone with symptoms to have themselves checked out.

She said: "If you have any symptoms like I had, which felt as though I was full before I had eaten, no real energy and a big bloatyness inside my stomach, I got it checked out and it was ovarian cancer.

"So onwards and upwards. I want to thank everyone for being behind me for so long and we will see what happens next.

"I want to thank the NHS who have been unbelievably brilliant- just brilliant.

"Look after each other and no doubt we'll speak soon.

She tweeted a picture of herself on social media with the caption: "Sorry but my last weekend of the tour can't go ahead in Edinburgh and Musselburgh as I am in hospital with ovarian cancer - look after each other. #MentalHealthMatters"

Monica Lennon, Labour MSP replied to the tweet: "Sorry to hear this Janey. Wishing you all the best. Take care x"

Author Jenny Colgan said: "oh no!!!!!! DM me if you want an early copy of next year’s book to distract you xxxxxx"

Actor Greg McHugh wrote: "Sending all the positive vibes Janey- awful to read this x"

Godley's daughter, Ashley Storrie shared her mums post writing: "Devastation doesn't touch the edges of how I feel right now. Thank you to all the amazing NHS staff who've been looking after mum and helped her come to terms with this terrifying news."

Godley found fame with her dubbed pastiches of Scotland First Minister Nicola Sturgeon's coronavirus news briefings during the pandemic.

A coronavirus advert featuring her was later pulled when offensive tweets resurfaced.
