Janey Godley hides from woman reading her own book on train in hilarious blunder

Janey Godley has admitted she had to move carriage on a train after she made a joke to a woman who was reading her autobiography.

In the hilarious anecdote, the woman was reading Janey’s bestselling autobiography Handstands in the Dark on a train from Glasgow to Newcastle.

Janey told the lady “she dies at the end” - obviously thinking that the reader would recognise her as the author.

Not only did she fail to recognise her (or realise that she was reading an autobiography by a woman who was still alive), the lady replied “f*** you” and “glared”.

Feeling so awkward, Janey moved carriages for the rest of the journey and hid.

She added “am dead to her now”.

Handstands In The Dark is now a bestseller, written about Janey’s tough childhood in the East End before she moved into a career in comedy.

Janey took to Twitter to tell the story in reply to a tweet that said “I’ve always fantasised about being on the tube, and the person next to me is reading my book, and me being able to lean over and say, ‘I wrote that’.”

She posted: “Sat on a train to the Stand Newcastle, and a woman was reading my autobiography.

"I jokingly said 'Oh I’ve read that, she dies at the end' thinking she’d know it was me (WHY WOULD SHE?) and laugh.

"She looked at me and said 'well f*** you' and glared at me. I moved into the next carriage."

Janey added: "I wanted to go back and explain but she was furious at me and I just hid until my stop.

"I am dead to her now. I think I really upset her - I just felt if I went back I would annoy her more and sound like a d**k saying 'actually wrote the book, am not dead'"

Jane’s latest book is called Frank, Get The Door! Ma Feet Are Killing Me and features her voiceovers from The First Minister's Covid-19 briefings.
