Jane Byrne funeral services begin Monday morning

Nov. 17--The wake and funeral for former Chicago Mayor Jane Byrne's will begin at 9 a.m. Monday at a Near North Side church.

According to an announcement by Mayor Rahm Emanuel's office, those services will be Monday at St. Vincent de Paul Church, 1010 W. Webster Ave., where Byrne's mother attended grammar school and where her grandparents were early parishioners, according to a release from the mayor's office.

Monday morning, Byrne's body will be driven in a procession from Smith-Corcoran Funeral Home on the Northwest Side, past her childhood home at 5904 N. Kolmar Ave., to the church.

Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. at St. Vincent's, with a Mass scheduled for 11 a.m., according to the mayor's office and Smith-Corcoran.

Monsignor Kenneth Velo will celebrate Mass, and family members will be part of the service. Byrne's nieces and nephews will act as pallbearers and readers. Her daughter, Kathy, will give a eulogy.

The funeral procession will go past City Hall and 111 E. Chestnut St., where Byrne lived for much of her adult life. She will be buried in Calvary Cemetery in Evanston.

Family members ask that in lieu of flowers, donations be made either to the Byrne Chicago Scholarship at Loyola University School of Law, 25. E. Pearson St., Chicago, 60611, or to the National Shrine of St. Jude, c/o the St. Jude League, 205 W. Monroe St., Chicago, 60606.

Byrne, 81, who faded from public view after losing a re-election bid in 1983 to Harold Washington, died Friday morning. She had a stroke last year and was receiving hospice care in a high-rise near the Water Tower downtown, according to her daughter.
