Jan Vertonghen sends Tottenham fans wild after delivering his verdict on Europa League draw

Former Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen will be returning to north London in the new year.

The 33-year-old, who left Spurs on a free transfer last summer, has seen his new club Benfica draw Arsenal in the Europa League round of 32.

Benfica progressed to this stage of the competition by finishing as runners-up to Rangers in Group D, but did remain unbeaten, winning three and drawing three of their six matches.

Vertonghen was an ever-present in the group stage and opened his account for the Portuguese outfit with a goal in their 4-0 win over Lech Poznan on matchday five.

Barring injury or a loss of form, Vertongthen will be expected to be in contention when Benfica host the Gunners on February 18th as well as the return leg at the Emirates Stadium a week later.

Given his ties to the Lilywhites, it's no surprise that there is a huge swell of support coming his way.

As soon as the draw was completed, Spurs supporters immediately flooded social media, trolling Arsenal and their fans, suggesting that Vertonghen is going to be Benfica's hero and dump them out of the competition.

And the Belgian has seemingly delivered his verdict on the possibility.

Spotted by Spurs supporters on Reddit, the defender has 'liked' two posts on Twitter in regards to the round of 32 tie which takes place in February.

One is official confirmation of the draw from the Europa League account and the other is a message from @thespursweb.

"Come on @JanVertonghen you know what you have to do when you return to North London."

Upon learning of Vertonghen's excitement about returning to north London in the new year, some Spurs fans on Reddit are predicting special things from the defender.

matty80 said: "I'm calling a 35-yard free-kick straight into the bottom-right corner."

Whilst Vertonghen will be busy attempting to knock Arsenal out of the Europa League, Spurs will be in action against Austrian outfit Wolfsberger.
