Jan Vertonghen's agent provides fresh update on defender's Tottenham future

Jan Vertonghen's Tottenham future still remains up in the air as we approach the final few months of the season.

The long-serving defender will be free to leave the Lilywhites in the summer with his contract set to expire and it's unclear at present as to whether or not he will be offered fresh terms.

Having seen Toby Alderweireld commit his future to the club and Christian Eriksen move to Inter Milan last month instead of leaving for nothing, Jose Mourinho now has a decision to make over the 32-year-old.

Vertonghen has been far from his best so far this season and he was substituted off in the 54th minute of Wednesday's 3-2 win over Southampton in the FA Cup as the head coach looked to shake things up with the visitors on top.

The defender looked absolutely devastated in the dugout after a slow walk around the pitch and many fans now believe that his time in north London is unfortunately coming to an end.

Speaking to Belgian publication HLN, Tom De Mul, Vertonghen's agent, opened up on his client's early substitution and what he is still looking to achieve in the game.

"Vertonghen was worried, but things are already going much better," he said. "This had nothing to do with his future. It is made a bit too big in my eyes.

"Jan was just disappointed at the time of his replacement. About his performance, about that of the team.

"He still wants to get good results with Spurs after a difficult start. Win a Europa League or Champions League ticket, or in this case the FA Cup.

"He is 32, but he is still so ambitious. He wants so much. The European Championship is, for example, a super priority.

"That's the beauty of him. He wants to play at the highest level in a top competition for as long as possible. He is still very hungry."

While things may not have gone to plan for the centre-back this season as he has been in and out of the team, De Mul has claimed that he is still happy in the capital.

"It is difficult for Jan to hide that, but that's just the way he is," he added. "He is still very happy with Tottenham and feels great in London. Jan has expanded his life there.

"It is out of the question that he will not let it go. He has a lot of respect for Tottenham. And on the other hand Tottenham is very respectful towards us. That makes sense after almost eight years. There is a bond. "

Asked about the possibility of a new contract for Vertonghen, De Mul said: "We currently have no agreement, but I do not exclude anything.

"We list everything. There is a lot of interest for Jan, certainly as a free player, but Tottenham also remains an interesting option for us. The door is still open. "
