Jan Vertonghen issues update on Tottenham contract talks and discusses Toby Alderweireld's future

Jan Vertonghen has refused to be drawn on whether he will sign a new contract at Tottenham.

The Belgian defender has just one year to run on his current deal - the same as former Ajax teammates Christian Eriksen and Toby Alderweireld.

There has been plenty of speculation over the futures of his two teammates, but Vertonghen has always maintained that he is happy at Spurs.

However, he has refused to comment on whether or not he will put pen to paper on a new deal to commit his future to the north Londoners.

Asked whether he had sat down with Spurs to discuss a new deal yet, Vertonghen said: “I just want to focus on this year. I know I’ve got one year left so lots of questions will be asked, like now.

“I’ve said it before, I’m very happy at the club. The support has been great for me and the manager has improved me a lot and has a lot of confidence in me and I feel very, very good physically. I’m not sure what’s going to happen this year, I can only say that I’m happy where I’m at and I feel the support from the manager and my teammates and the supporters.”

Similarly, Vertonghen could not say what the intentions of Alderweireld were either.

“You never know,” Vertonghen smiled. “I played for so many years with Toby. He’s a very good player, he’s a great guy for the group and like I said before, it’s out of my hands but he’s here now and I’m happy with that.”

Spurs rounded off their pre-season campaign with a draw against Inter Milan in the International Champions Cup, losing out on a penalty shootout.

And overall, the Spurs defender was pleased with how the summer had gone at the club.

“I think we are looking sharp and looking forward to the start of the season,” he said. “I think we had a good pre-season, obviously a pre-season needs to be tough so that’s good and we had a couple of good games, saw some youngsters,” Vertonghen continued.

“Obviously injuries are not always great but I think maybe that’s the only thing that wasn’t great this pre-season.”

He also earmarked young English right-back Kyle Walker-Peters as someone who’d impressed him during pre-season.

“I think the squad looks good. Just Tripps [Kieran Trippier] I think left,” he said. “I think Kyle Walker-Peters is doing very well, we’ve got Serge Aurier who came back from the African Cup [of Nations].

“Tanguy [Ndombele] is a great addition to the squad, so I think everyone is very positive,” he added about Spurs’ new £55m midfielder, who made his home debut against Inter.

Asked if he thought the squad was ready and if there would be any more new names arriving in North London, Vertonghen said: “We just look at ourselves, you know. We want to be in the best shape as possible and whoever comes in or goes out, that’s out of our hands.

“We’ve got a great squad with great guys and I think whoever’s here is ready to play for Spurs in the league.”
