Jan Vertonghen hopes his Tottenham teammate Christian Eriksen will choose to remain at the club next season.

Eriksen has one more year left on his current deal in north London but has confirmed he would like a new challenge after helping Spurs to a fourth consecutive top-four finish and a first European Cup final.

The Dane is a target for Real Madrid and Inter Milan while Manchester United have also identified the 27-year-old as a possible replacement for Paul Pogba – should the France international leave Old Trafford this summer.

Vertonghen, who also played alongside Eriksen at Ajax before they were reunited at White Hart Lane, has not given up hope of him staying for another season, however.

"Obviously when the transfer window starts there are a lot of rumours, but there were rumours last year and everyone stayed together, so I'm hopeful,” Vertonghen told Sky Sports News.

"Christian is a great player. I have known him since he was 16, played with him since he was 16 or 17 [at Ajax] and I hope he's with Tottenham next season. He's an exceptional player."
