Jan Vertonghen appears to drop a big hint about his Tottenham future

Jan Vertonghen has admitted that while he could stay at Tottenham Hotspur, he wants "to play in Europe and learn another language".

The Belgian, who turns 33 on Friday, comes to the end of his contract on June 30 after eight years at Spurs.

He signed in the summer of 2012 and has played under four different managers during his time in north London.

There is still some doubt over exactly what will happen with expiring contracts due to the current football shutdown and whether they will be temporarily extended if they current season can be concluded and runs past the end of June.

Vertonghen is currently training in virtual group sessions with the rest of the squad under head coach Jose Mourinho as they await what happens next and he admitted this week that he would like to expand his horizons with his next move.

"I want to sign with the right club. It could be Spurs, or another club,” the defender told Dutch Youtube channel Play Sports Kot.

"It must be a club with ambition. I want to play in Europe, as the national team is important for me."

He added: "I want to play in Europe and learn another language.

"Spain and Italy are options, and the duration of the contract will also play a role."

Vertonghen is a popular member of the Tottenham squad but with time winding down on his current deal and the club having thus far been unable to agree an extension, the Belgian could be heading to a new country next season.
