Jan Oblak to Chelsea transfer links 'logical' to Diego Simeone - but Atletico Madrid want goalkeeper to stay

Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone says he is not surprised by reported interest from Chelsea in Jan Oblak, but hopes his in-demand goalkeeper will stay at the Spanish side.

The Slovenian shot-stopper is considered by many to be the world’s best and was compared to Lionel Messi by Simeone after his heroics in the Champions League last-16 win at Anfield in March.

Chelsea have been linked with the 27-year-old after doubts over Kepa Arrizabalaga and it has been claimed that the Blues would consider a possible swap deal plus cash to sign Oblak.

“At the end of the season, our important players are always wanted by the world’s important clubs,” Simeone said in a press conference on Wednesday.

“It’s normal that clubs look for the best players and we have many who are very good.

"In previous seasons, some have left and some have stayed.

“But it’s logical and normal that a footballer like Oblak would be wanted by anyone.”

And he added: “For us, he is our captain, our important player year after year, and hopefully we can continue counting on his work, which is enormous for Atletico Madrid.”
