Iconic British biscuit brand Jammie Dodgers has revised its recipe to make to be suitable for vegans – again.
Years ago, Jammie Dodgers were an inadvertently vegan product because of what they didn’t contain. However, in 2016 Burton’s Biscuits, which makes the sweet treat, added milk protein, meaning vegans were no longer able to consume them with a clear conscience.
At the time, the company said it made the addition to “improve flavour and texture” and was part of an overhaul that would also see the sugar content reduced by 22 per cent.
Now, the shortcake biscuits are going vegan again and this time, the change is permanent.
Announcing the news on Instagram, the brand wrote: “NEWS FLASH. Now EVERYONE can enjoy Jammie Dodgers.
“Our new recipe tastes just as good but is now 100 per cent plant based. Vegans rejoice and tag a pal that will defo want a pack below!”
Kate Needham, marketing director at Burtons Biscuits, also confirmed the news in a statement to Vegan Food & Living, saying: “We have listened to our biscuit fans and are pleased to announce that we’ve moved once again to a dairy-free recipe.
“Family fun is at the Jammie heart of our brand, so it’s important to us that the whole family – and families of all lifestyles – can share a pack. Thanks to the new recipe, we’re happy that will now be more possible.”
In addition to the recipe change, Jammie Dodgers have also been given a makeover. The new biscuits will now come in darker packaging so they can be easily identified on supermarket shelves and will also feature the slogan: “No Nasty Stuff! We’re Jammie Enough!”
The news has been welcomed by biscuit lovers on social media, with one person writing: “Ohhhh dayum, gonna get me some Jammie Dodgers!”
Another person agreed, commenting: “Yessss!!! So happy about this. Tea breaks are back!”, while a third added: “The best news EVER! Thank you for this.”
The vegan-friendly biscuits will be available to buy in stores across the country from 13 July in both standard and mini-sized packets.
