Jamie Walker's 'bittersweet' Hearts moment that saw him eclipse even Rudi Skacel

Jamie Walker surpassed even Rudi Skacel at the weekend by netting his 50th goal for Hearts.

He came off the bench to salvage a point for Robbie Neilson’s team at home to Greenock Morton as their Championship lead was cut to 11 points.

The result made the moment “bittersweet” according to Walker, but it was still a special feeling to reach the half century mark for his boyhood club.

He said: “I’m delighted with the goal. It feels like my 50th has been a long time coming and it is a proud moment for me and my family. To hit 50 goals for the club I grew up supporting is something special.

“I never imagined I’d hit that number when I started. I was just delighted to be a part of the first-team and just making my debut was a proud moment. To have gone on and scored so many times for the club feels like a crazy achievement.

“Even people like Rudi Skacel never managed to achieve that feat so it is something I can look back on fondly.

“This season hasn’t been easy for me and even last season wasn’t exactly what I expected coming back, but I’ll always believe in myself that I can get in the box and score goals.”

A header might not have been how most expected Walker to reach his milestone, and the player himself was certainly surprised by the circumstances in which it came.

He added: "I’ve scored maybe four or five [headers]. I probably wasn’t expecting my 50th goal to be a header. Especially in a draw against Morton. It was a bittersweet day.

“I think I’ve played pretty well in the last couple of weeks. I was disappointed not to start but when I did get on the pitch, I was determined and was happy to get us the goal which got us back in the game.”

“Even if we ultimately wrap up the title, we still want to win football matches."
