Jamie Vardy’s hopes of starting England’s game against France are receding after Roy Hodgson admitted the Leicester City striker was still troubled by the injury that ruled him out of the defeat in Spain.

Vardy hurt a hip during Leicester’s game against Watford last Saturday and also has a swollen knee and the England manager was pessimistic when he was asked about the striker’s chances of being fit enough to play.

“It will be touch and go because he came with the injury and we were hoping with the days and the treatment and rest that he would be a lot better,” Hodgson said. “I don’t think it is, so unless there is some real change in that respect then we wouldn’t take a risk with him. That would be unfair on Leicester. He would have to recover and be fit for us to play him and the chances aren’t more than 50-50.”

Michael Carrick has definitely been ruled out of Tuesday’s game because of the ankle injury that meant he was taken off on a stretcher late in the match in Alicante. “I fear if it is ligament damage it might keep him out for a long period,” Hodgson said.
