Jamie Shackleton reveals his personal targets at Leeds United this season

Jamie Shackleton has revealed how he’s looking ahead to the new season and what his personal ambitions are within Marcelo Bielsa’s squad at Leeds United

The energetic midfielder, who made his first Championship start of the season against Barnsley on Sunday, is considered one of the best prospects to come out of the club’s academy in recent years.

Shackleton had been included in the starting line-up for both League Cup games, playing throughout the 3-0 win over Salford, but being withdrawn at half-time, two goals down against Stoke, as Bielsa looked to make a tactical switch.

“Just to play as much as possible really,” he responded, when asked if he has any personal targets this season.

“When the chance comes to take it, and to play as many games here at this club as possible.

“And more goals! More goals to my game, that’s another target of mine.”

The 19-year-old is yet to score a senior goal for Leeds, but he’s a lively presence in the final third and often picks the ball up in dangerous areas.

He was given the opportunity at Oakwell because Adam Forshaw had a hip complaint. The former Middlesbrough man is also still waiting for his first United goal.

Shackleton also spoke about the value of representing England’s Under-20s and getting international experience, having been called up for them over the international break after making his debut at the Toulon tournament in the summer.

The Young Lions beat Switzerland courtesy of an injury-time winner from Shackleton’s Leeds team-mate, and fellow academy graduate, Jack Clarke.

“I enjoyed it,” he added. “I played the second game in Switzerland and we won that one 1-0. A good international break overall.”

“The style that England have is different to here, and it’s definitely an experience learning under different managers, how they want you to play. Overall it’s going to improve me as a player.
