Jamie Roberts tips Rugby World Cup upset that would ensure a Wales v England quarter-final

There's a well-worn cliché in rugby that you never know which France team is going to turn up.

Ok, it's very well-worn.

But anyone who has watched their first two matches of the Rugby World Cup in Japan would likely agree. They've flitted many times between dangerous and abject at will.

But former Wales star Jamie Roberts hold them in high regard - despite their inconsistencies.

He took to social media after their stuttering 33-9 win over USA on Wednesday to tell the world that Jaques Brunel's side are "contenders" for the tournament in Japan - if they deliver for 80 minutes.

He tweeted: "Said it before the tournament started....If France deliver for 80 mins they’re serious contenders."

In fairness, as he points out, Roberts had nailed his colours to the mast before the tournament and his predictions have already started to bear fruit.

Many would be predicting a Wales v France quarter-final after Warren Gatland's men beat Australia to take charge of Pool D.

But, while Roberts predicted before the tournament in the Telegraph that Wales would top the group, he also backed France to win Pool C.

Tipping France as his dark horses for the tournament, he said: "France love to upset the odds at a Rugby World Cup and this will be no different. They can shock England."

Were France to top their pool, that would see England face Wales in the quarter-finals - with Roberts adding that "Gatland knows how to defeat them" as he predicted that Wales will go all the way to lift the Webb Ellis Cup.
