Jamie Roberts quits Welsh rugby for personal reasons

Jamie Roberts has cited personal reasons for his impending departure from the Dragons.

The region have confirmed that he has been granted early release from his contract as he moves to Australia.

Roberts' partner, Nicole Ramson, is Australian and she returned to Sydney a few weeks ago.

She is also heavily pregnant with their second child and the decision has been made for Roberts to join her, with the new arrival due in March.

“It is with a heavy heart that I’m leaving the Dragons at the end of the month. I’d like to personally thank Dean [Ryan] for understanding my personal circumstances,” he said.

“As my Sydney-born partner is expecting our second child in March, we feel the best decision for our family is to be surrounded by her support network in Sydney during this period.

“Although it’ll be difficult leaving, I do so with many fond memories.

“As well as enjoying wearing the jersey and playing, I’ve taken great satisfaction in supporting and witnessing the growth and development of many younger players in the squad, many of whom are no doubt destined for success in the game.

“I wish the coaching and playing group nothing but the very best moving forward.”

The two-time British and Irish Lions star made 23 appearances for the regions after joining in August 2020, scoring five tries.

Dean Ryan, Director of Dragons Rugby, said: “We thank Jamie for his time at Dragons and the support he has given us; helping stabilise the environment and encouraging youngsters to come through.

“We fully support what has been a difficult decision for him to make.

"We wish him a safe trip over to Australia and look forward to welcoming him and his family back to Rodney Parade in the years to come.”

Update: The Sydney-based Waratahs have now confirmed the signing of Roberts on a one-year injury cover contract for the 2022 Super Rugby Pacific season, which gets underway on February 18.

“Losing two of our centres in Joey Walton and Mosese Tuipulotu was a big blow as we view them as the future of the side. So, to be able to bring in a player with the experience and talent that Jamie has on an injury coverage contract is huge for us,” said Waratahs boss Darren Coleman.

“Jamie has been playing at a consistently high level with Dragons in Wales this season and adds a really big body for go forward and is very sound defensively. He adds vital depth in our midfield and will complement the mix of players we currently have.

“Off the field he will also add a lot to the group and our team culture with his professionalism and experience.”
