Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp has insisted Newcastle must see signing Manchester United midfielder Jesse Lingard as a priority in the upcoming January transfer window.
Lingard, 29, has seen limited game time this season with the Reds and could be coming towards the end of his 22 year affinity with his boyhood club.
With Newcastle potentially looking to bring in some well needed reinforcements to secure Premier League survival this season, the United number 14 could prove pivotal in guiding Eddie Howe's side away from those dreaded relegation places.
United's cross town rivals were the last to visit St James Park just this weekend, with Pep Guardiola's side continuing their impressive run of form with a comfortable 4-0 away victory in the North East.
But with Lingard's future still very much up in the air despite the arrival of new interim boss Ralf Rangnick, Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp believes the Magpies cannot keep depending on the goals of their current failing attacking options to keep them in the division.
“You can’t just keep relying on Callum Wilson," Redknapp told Sky Sports.
"Jesse Lingard has had a shout, if I was Newcastle right now he would be my first signing.
''He’s out of contract in the summer, you can get him at a good price. Great mentality, there's definitely goals in him.”
With many other potential suitors keeping close tabs on Lingard's contract situation at Old Trafford, too, ex loan club West Ham United may also be keen on once retaining his services, after a blistering loan spell towards the end of 20/21 season.
The attacking midfielder netted nine times, as well as providing five assists, in 16 appearances while with the Hammers.
