Jamie Redknapp has encouraged Liverpool to sign Jadon Sancho in order to get one over on rivals Manchester United.
The Borussia Dortmund star was top of United's summer wishlist but they were unable to get a deal over the line.
Sancho is one of football's hottest properties following several impressive years in the Bundesliga.
A host of Europe's leading lights are keeping tabs on the 20-year-old who looks set to seek pastures new before too long.
And even though Redknapp doesn't see Sancho as a starter for Liverpool he still sees the value in securing his services.
“Look, Jadon Sancho is a superb talent, and obviously, Liverpool would take him,” he told Paddy Power.
“But right now, if you’re playing him on that right side, he’s not a better player than Mo Salah. He’s also not a better player than Sadio Mane.
“He makes goals, he brings something completely different to what Liverpool are trying to do, and if you want to keep improving and getting better, then of course you’d want him in your team.
“You could stop him going to Man United as well, even better.
“But right now, if he came to Anfield, would he get in the team? I don’t personally think so.”
United came in for plenty of criticism for their failure to sign Sancho.
Dortmund gave the Red Devils an August 10 deadline by which to complete the transfer but that came and went.
Sancho was then involved in the German club's pre-season preparations and they stood firm on their stance that he would not be sold.
United deemed their asking price too high in light of the coronavirus pandemic which has seen football's finances take a massive hit.
The English winger is tipped to return to the Premier League having spent his youth career at Watford and Manchester City.
