Jamie Redknapp says Illan Meslier could have caused Ben Mee a serious injury when the duo clashed in the first half of Leeds United's win over Burnley.
The Whites led 1-0 thanks to Patrick Bamford's early penalty before Ashley Barnes had an equaliser ruled out following a collision between Meslier and Mee in the penalty area.
Meslier came to claim a lofted ball into the box but spilt the ball after contact from Mee, leading referee Robert Jones to blow for a foul on the goalkeeper before Barnes fired the ball home.
The decision prompted criticism from Match of the Day's Gary Lineker, with Jones' early whistle meaning the decision could not be reviewed by VAR.
With Burnley subsequently losing 1-0, Clarets boss Sean Dyche confronted Jones post-match over the decision and Redknapp could see why.
Speaking on Sky Sports, the pundit agreed that Jones blew too early and said that, in retrospect, it was arguably a foul by Meslier.
"I'd be so frustrated if I was the manager," he said.
"I think the mistake that Robert Jones makes is that he blows the whistle too quickly, sometimes you've got to let it breathe.
"Meslier comes in and takes him out, his left knee goes into the back of him. When you think of how much the game has become sanitised, we talk about players jumping with their arms up in the air, for some reason we let that go, when the goalkeeper decides to come and put their knee in someone's back.
"You could get a serious injury doing that.
"It's a brilliant finish as well by Ashley Barnes. It's the other way round if anything, he should have let it go and then make a decision.
"I think Robert Jones got it wrong. It's very early into his Premier League career but, if he had his time again, I think he'd just take a breath and see what happens at the end of it."
