Jamie Redknapp pours cold water on Philippe Coutinho to Chelsea transfer talk

Former Liverpool and Tottenham midfielder Jamie Redknapp has poured cold water on the reports that Philippe Coutinho could join Chelsea.

The Brazil international looks set to leave Barcelona in the summer transfer window and a return to the Premier League has been heavily touted.

However, despite reports suggesting Chelsea are close to a deal, Redknapp has admitted it's a deal he can't see happening - which has significance due to the fact he is Frank Lampard's cousin.

As he explained, he believes that Chelsea and Lampard will keep faith on the young players they have in their squad, particularly Mason Mount.

“I don’t see this one. I think it’s an awful lot of money. I really like him, he’s a super talented player, but he doesn’t get enough goals,” he told Sky Sports.

“You’ve got Mason Mount there, Frank has obviously given a lot of trust to the young players and they’ve come through, so you’ve got Pulisic, Mount. Pedro and Willian are out of contract but I just don’t see, the way that the club has been going for the past year, that they will go and spend £79million on a player.

“I like him, of course he’s talented, but you’ve got Mount coming through, why would you risk limiting his opportunities when I think he’s going to be a top-class player himself?”
