Jamie Redknapp makes Mikel Arteta claim as Arsenal close in on Thomas Partey transfer

Jamie Redknapp believes Arsenal’s best bit of business over the last year was bringing in Mikel Arteta as the club’s manager.

Arteta was appointed as Gunners' boss in December 2019, replacing Unai Emery following a poor start to the 2019-20 season.

Since the former midfielder took over at the Emirates Stadium, the club saw a positive turn in results and the style of play changed massively.

After working with Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, Arteta has adopted a similar style of short-passing football, but with some differences.

Redknapp, speaking about the Gunners’ transfer business in the summer window as they chase Thomas Partey, has explained how their best bit of business was the appointment of Arteta almost 12 months ago.

The former Liverpool midfielder said on Sky Sports News: “Their best signing has been their manager.

“There were some players there that I thought weren’t good enough - not just for Arsenal - but for the Premier League.

"He’s turned them into really good players, they’re playing in the right way, they’ve got a system that really works for them.

“I’ve been really surprised by how well he’s done, Mikel Arteta, he looks like the real deal and I like the way they play. Adding players in like Partey will add a bit more solidity in an area where they’ve struggled in recent years.”

Partey is currently on his way to London for a medical with the club, football.london understands.
