You could argue that with a transfer embargo handed down by FIFA, the new head coach did not have much of a choice.
But there are plenty of experienced players at Stamford Bridge already, missing out because of the fine form of Tammy Abraham, Mason Mount and Fikayo Tomori.
With the likes of Callum Hudson-Odoi, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Reece James all to come back from injury too, there could be a really impressive English core at Chelsea - something that would have been unheard of a decade ago.
The Blues take on Liverpool at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, in front of the Sky Sports cameras.
And Sky pundit Jamie Redknapp has been talking about his cousin Lampard's impact on the club and the young players in particular.
And the former Liverpool and Spurs man made a brilliant joke when discussing their form.
He said: "There's a rumour going round they've asked the transfer ban to go on for another year so they can play even more young players!"
Chelsea are, of course, hoping the ban will be lifted in time for the January transfer window, so they can add to their squad, but if they don't the future certainly looks bright under the English boss and his young English players.
Redknapp added: "They've lifted the club.
"He's brought in young players, given them an opportunity and you're never sure how it's going to work out, you never know how they're going to adjust to the Premier League, but they've led the way.
"It's almost now that the experienced players have got to get up to the level that the young players are at.
"He's given the whole academy a lift. Before your pathway was closed, you had no chance of getting in the first team, now all of a sudden those academy players are worth £150million between all of them."
