Jamie Redknapp identifies the first transfer Newcastle United must make after proposed takeover

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp believes Newcastle United must address their goal-scoring problems by signing a new striker once their proposed takeover is completed.

A £300million deal is reported to have been agreed between Amanda Staveley and Mike Ashley, which is expected to finally see the current owner’s 13-year spell at Newcastle come to an end.

The Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund has bankrolled the move, and will own 80% of the club, making the Magpies one of the richest clubs in the Premier League.

With Newcastle supporters hopeful of entering a new world in the transfer market, speculation has sparked about the areas Steve Bruce must strengthen in his squad first.

When posed that very question, Redknapp believes that a new striker must be their first priority, given their struggles in front of goal this season.

Record signing Joelinton has managed just one Premier League goal all season, whilst no team has scored fewer in the top-flight this season.

“They need a striker that can score, and that would be first on the list," Redknapp told Sky Sports' The Football Show.

"What they’ve struggled with – under Bruce and under Benitez – they struggle to keep the ball. They need to be comfortable at home. They certainly need a striker,” Redknapp said.
