Jamie Redknapp delivers worrying Tottenham verdict as he assesses Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg debut

Jamie Redknapp has questioned whether new Tottenham midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is the man Jose Mourinho needs in his midfield.

Hojbjerg made his Premier League debut for Spurs as they fell to Everton in their season opener on Sunday.

And Redknapp wasn't particularly impressed by the Dane's performance, questioning whether the £15million might have been better spent on a different type of midfielder, though the Sky Sports pundit did admit he was basing that view on very limited evidence.

"This is week one, we have to be extremely careful," he said on Sky Sports after Spurs' 1-0 defeat to Everton. "Hojbjerg, today, didn’t have his best game, but it’s his debut - I don’t want to jump into his nightmare.

"Once he gets his fitness and starts to play more games, he will get better and improve.

"But when I look at what Spurs need, is he the sort of player this Spurs midfield need right now? I think back to not too long ago when they had a midfield with an understanding.

"I thought to myself, ‘this is as good as it gets’, they worked so hard, they kept the ball, they were as strong as other teams.

"Right now, I look and think who is going to be the player to unlock the door? Who is going to do something special.

"It looks like it’s very easy to play against that Spurs midfield right now."

Hojbjerg joined Spurs on a £15million deal from Southampton in the summer.

The 25-year-old spent four years at St Mary's before making the switch to North London.
