Jamie Redknapp lashed into Liverpool's players following the defeat to Chelsea on Thursday night after accusing them of self-pity.
The Sky Sports pundit's comments came after another poor showing at Anfield that saw them lose 1-0 to Thomas Tuchel's men.
That is the fifth time Liverpool have tasted defeat at home in a row - something that has never happened before.
Their slump coincides with great form from teams around them, particularly Chelsea and, more bitterly for Reds fans, Everton.
It means Jurgen Klopp's side are seventh in the Premier League - but it could be about to get a lot worse.
Both West Ham and Everton, directly above them in sixth and fifth respectively, have games in hand and could further the gap between them.
While Tottenham are sneaking back up the table while Aston Villa will leapfrog Liverpool if they win their games in hand.
And on Thursday night's display, it points towards further woes to come for the Premier League champions.
It will take some big personalities to get the Reds over the hump and that is something that had become synonymous under Klopp.
But that factor has disappeared, something Redknapp alluded to in post-match analysis on Sky Sports.
He said: "I see a lot of Liverpool players who are feeling sorry for themselves right now.
"Last year, Liverpool were a pressing machine. Right now, teams are doing that to them."
Andy Robertson was furious after the match, telling his team-mates they cannot rely on their past to get them through the season.
"Last season is over with, it is done," the Scotsman said.
"We have nowhere near been good enough to what Liverpool team should be. We are dropping further and it is not good enough.
"Games are running out and we need to put the pressure on the teams below us.
"People will think we are down and out and we need to get the results to show them we are not. At the moment we are not doing that.
"We can't rely on the past."
