Jamie Paterson's return from Derby County confirmed as Bristol City consider further recalls

Guess who's back? Jamie Paterson's back after a brief dalliance with Derby County this season.

The attacking midfielder is currently training with the Robins up at Failand again following the ending of his six-month loan deal with the Rams.

Paterson made five starts and five substitute appearances for Phillip Cocu's team this season after making a surprise deadline day loan move up to Pride Park at the end of the summer transfer window.

However, Cocu has seen fit to let Paterson head back to BS3 following just 493 minutes of playing time in Derbyshire, and with the former Nottingham Forest midfielder having already played for Bristol City against Leeds United earlier this season, the 28-year-old will likely remain with the Robins for the duration of this campaign.

Head coach Lee Johnson confirmed the news - that we revealed back in November - that the attacker would return to Bristol City.

"Pato returns, yes - he has been training with us the last couple of days," said Johnson in the pre-Brentford press conference.

"We’ve got a couple of decisions to make but again, you have Rodri out of contract, Joe Morrell potentially being recalled, the boys at Torquay...

"I do want to reduce the numbers in the squad.

"It’s great when you’ve got injuries but in truth, we sold the dream to these players, a lot of these are young players and whether it be my fault, their fault, the team’s fault because they’re winning or losing, some of them haven’t had the game time.

"Like Sammie Szmodics for example - he probably deserves and therefore it’s difficult because you don’t want to restrict their career but you also see them part of the long term future of the club.

"So there’s players like that, that could with Pato coming back look for a loan and give them an opportunity to play Championship football on a regular basis," explained the head coach.
