Jamie Oliver's Edinburgh restaurant closes as administrators are called in

Jamie Oliver's Edinburgh restaurant has closed after the business went into administration

Around 1000 jobs have been lost across the UK with 22 restaurants shutting down – including the Jamie's Italian eatery on George Street.

The restaurant chain failed to stay afloat on its own so administrators KPMG are being called in.

It emerged in 2018 that the TV chef's restaurant business was more than £71 million in debt – owing staff around £2.2 million alone.

The Mirror reports that last year Oliver blamed Brexit on the closure of six of the branches, saying that rising food and staffing costs along with a weakening pound and poor trading conditions had contributed to the decision.

He said: "I am deeply saddened by this outcome and would like to thank all of the staff and our suppliers who have put their hearts and souls into this business for over a decade.

"I appreciate how difficult this is for everyone affected."
