Jamie Oliver has dropped the term ‘Kaffir lime leaves’ in his recipes following concerns that the word has historically been used as a racial slur in South Africa.
The word has already been removed from Mr Oliver’s online recipe for quick chicken laksa and he will now refer to the leaves as ‘lime leaves’ instead.
His team is also said to be reviewing and editing previous content where the term was used.
A source close to the TV chef confirmed the move this morning to Mail Online.
In a statement, they said: “I can confirm that we’re also making the change - to lime leaves - and won’t be using the term going forward. Historical recipe content will be reviewed accordingly.”
His move comes after big brands, including Tesco, joined the movement and also banned the use of the term.
The supermarket said it stood against racism and discrimination and has started the process of modifying the product labels.
Other brands in the process of updating the names include Sainsbury’s and Co-op.
Waitrose was the first store to announce it would be dropping the term from its Cooks’ Ingredients product last week.
The brand said it would be re-labelling it as Makrut Lime Leaves “in response to customer comments we’ve received,” Mail online reported.
Waitrose also said it would explain the name change on recipe cards and in its cookery schools as other literature still widely refers to Kaffir lime leaves.
