Jamie Murphy seals Rangers exit as midfielder completes Burton Albion loan move

Rangers midfielder Jamie Murphy has joined Burton Albion on loan until the end of the season.

The fringe man has struggled to break into the Ibrox first team this season and has sealed his switch to the League One outfit.

The 31-year-old was delighted to make the move after a horrific spell of injury kept him sidelined for a year.

“The training ground is second to none and it was good to get out there and get a training session in with all the boys," said Murphy.

“I have worked with Nigel Clough before and had some of my greatest moments as a footballer under him, so it was an easy one to pick coming here.

“I want to be back enjoying football again. It has been a nightmare time with my knee but I’m now just looking forward to playing again and, hopefully, helping the boys win on Saturday.”

Clough, for his part, was delighted to secure his man.

He said: “We can’t quite believe we have got him but we are absolutely delighted.

"When we heard he was down to go out on loan we made an enquiry but to get a player from Rangers of Jamie’s quality is brilliant. The fact that we have worked with him before and that we get on well with his agent has helped.

“He wants to get out and play some football. He was out for a while with a knee injury, which is one of the reasons he’s coming out, but he’s fully fit now and available for Saturday. What he did for us at Sheffield United and how he played there means we are very excited to have him on board.

“He plays wide mainly but can play up the middle as well. He carries the ball very well, makes goals and scores goals. He will be a great asset as we try and push for a place in the top six."

The 30-year-old has 18 months left on his deal at Ibrox but has barely featured under Steven Gerrard after he suffered a horror knee injury in August 2018.

Sporting Director Ross Wilson made it clear he wanted Rangers to trim their bloated squad in this month's window and Murphy is the latest to leave the club.

Greg Docherty, Matt Polster and Glenn Middleton could be joining him before the end of the month.

Docherty looked as if he was ready to complete a short term deal to Sunderland, but Lee Bowyer's Charlton have now entered the frame.
