Jamie Lynn Spears has dropped out of the ITV reality series I’m a Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here! for medical reasons.

“Jamie Lynn Spears has left I’m a Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here! on medical grounds,” said ITV in an official statement. “She’s been a fantastic camp mate who has triumphed at trials and bonded well with her fellow celebrities.”

Spears’ final appearance on the show will be on Wednesday night. Her appearances had frequently seen her in tears, including moments when she claimed she felt “emotionally weak”.

Tuesday night’s episode saw her weeping after eating a piece of chocolate shared with her by boxer Tony Bellew, leading her to walk away from the camp because the taste reminded her of the outside world.

“That little square of chocolate pissed me off,” she said. “I probably should have just let someone eat it.”

The American actor and singer is the second contestant to depart the reality show early on the grounds of poor health, after Guardian restaurant critic Grace Dent who left earlier this week.

Dent was pictured at Brisbane airport shortly after ITV announced she was to leave the reality TV show early. In a statement, Dent said: “My dear camp mates, I’m so sorry to let you down. I have left the camp for medical reasons. My heart is broken, I have loved and enjoyed getting to know you all.”

“You’ve held me up and it’s been a pleasure being your friend through this experience. Leaving you all at this stage will be one of the saddest things in my life. I love you all. Your friend, Miss Grace Dent.”
