Jamie Lee Curtis reflects on overcoming secret opioid addiction

Jamie Lee Curtis is proud to have made it through an addiction to opioids nearly two decades ago.

The actress spoke about her battle with addiction, as well as her recovery, in a new interview with People, sharing that she kept her struggles under wraps for years before getting sober nearly two decades ago.

"I'm breaking the cycle that has basically destroyed the lives of generations in my family," Curtis told the magazine. "Getting sober remains my single greatest accomplishment... bigger than my husband, bigger than both of my children and bigger than any work, success, failure. Anything."

Curtis, 59, didn't tell anyone about her addiction issues for nearly 10 years after initially being prescribed opiates in 1989 following an elective plastic surgery procedure.

She stole medication from family and friends amid her struggle, before finally going to a recovery meeting in 1999 _ the year after her sister learned of what she was going through.

Even her husband didn't know about her addiction until the day she went to that first meeting.

"I was ahead of the curve of the opiate epidemic," Curtis told People. "I had a 10-year run, stealing, conniving. No one knew. No one."

Curtis lost her half-brother, Nicholas, in 1994 to a heroine overdose. Her father Tony also struggled with that drug and had issues with alcohol and cocaine as well.

The "Halloween" star has been open about her past struggles with addiction to both opiates and alcohol in the years since her recovery.
