Jamie Gillan was at a Cleveland bar when he found out he’d won the Browns punting job

Jamie Gillan is quickly on his way to becoming one of Cleveland’s favorite players. The new punter is charismatic, unusual and a great story.

The “Scottish Hammer” is also a man of the people. The Cleveland people.

Gillan revealed to cleveland.com that he was out at a bar in the Tremont district of the city with his father when he got the news he had made the team. He took the congratulatory call from Browns GM John Dorsey surrounded by new fans.

“I was with my dad,’’ he said. “I was trying to not sit around the house and twiddle my thumbs. We’re sitting at the bar and hanging out and I got the call from Mr. Dorsey. He said, ‘Get ready for Tennessee.’’’

Gillan then tried to buy a round of drinks for everyone in the bar, but the Clevelanders turned the tables and celebrated one for their new long-haired, rugby-taught punter.

“I just kind of said, ‘It looks like I’m playing Tennessee next week,’ and everybody just started going crazy,’’ said Gillan. “So it was really cool.’’
