Jamie Foxx lined up to play Electro in Spider-Man sequel

Jamie Foxx is set to take the role of supervillain Electro in Marc Webb's planned sequel to The Amazing Spider-Man, according to Variety.

Though as yet unconfirmed, both star and director have hinted that Foxx is ready to let sparks fly. "Dressed up as Electro for Halloween last night," tweeted Foxx on Thursday. "Costume fits well." When asked about Foxx's potential role at a promotional event for The Amazing Spider-Man DVD release, Webb said: "I think Jamie Foxx is electrifying! You'll be hearing more on that shortly I'm sure."

Electro (AKA Max Dillon) first appeared in the Marvel comics' Spider Man series in February 1964. Once a humble sparky, he gained the power to control electricity when he was struck by lightning while working on a power cable. The character is a long-term foe of the webslinging hero in the comics, but his appearance in The Amazing Spider-Man sequel will mark his first appearance on the big screen.

Webb's sequel will follow the critical and commercial success of his reboot of the franchise, which appeared a mere decade after the first of Sam Raimi's trilogy of Spidey stories. Webb's version, which starred Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, is the third highest grossing comic-book movie this year. Garfield is set to return for the sequel, though his co-star and off-screen girlfriend Emma Stone is yet to announce whether she'll return to the role of Peter Parker's science whizz girlfriend, Gwen Stacy.

Meanwhile Foxx is preparing for the release of Django Unchained, Quentin Tarantino's "southern" about a freed slave turned bounty hunter searching Mississippi for his kidnapped wife. That movie is released on Christmas Day in the US and 18 January in the UK. The second Amazing Spider-Man film will start shooting next year and is due to be released in May 2014.
